The number of state-sanctioned executions almost doubled last year. A report by Amnesty International shows Iran, Saudi Arabia and China as being responsible for 90 per cent of all executions in 2008. Now, Iran is proposing a new law that could see the death sentence imposed on internet bloggers who post offensive material on the web. Al Jazeera’s Nazanin Sadri reports.

I don’t think you understand Western culture or the notion of individual freedom protected by the state. In the United States, freedom of speech and religion are codified – the act doesnt kill anyone based on thought crimes.
As for Islamophobia, I consider it a nonsense term. We have a real problem with any ideology that kills people based on their opinions. The Islamic “republic” (not a true republic as many candidates are banned) uses blasphemy laws to prevent itself from being criticized.

Stories like these leave me torn… There is much to be said for the intentional demonizing of Iran by the US govn (I’m a US citizen btw) and the puppet nature of US news organizations. In contrast a great deal of meaningful defense is made of Iran as being a ‘mistreated’ Islamic nation. Then…. stories like these… Killing people for their ‘ideas’.
