You set up your website, added your RSS feed and started a monthly submission routine. Now what?

Well, let’s compare this to an off-line business. What you have done is set up your business “store” and put the open sign in the window. Now its time to start bringing in some potential customers. If you opened your store in a busy mall then you could naturally expect to receive traffic from mall foot traffic. But wait, what if you opened your store on a quiet back street? You may have a great product and great parking but no one will find you. This is the situation you are in with your website, no one knows where your website is and therefore there is no traffic and no conversions.

An important concept to keep in mind about traffic generation is to go where the traffic is and where you can redirect the traffic to you. Let’s look at some ways an offline business would generate traffic that we could apply to our online business.

Offline, business owners will network, join the local chamber of commerce, and other networking organizations to get the word out about them and their business. You will find them with small kiosks in malls and display booths at trade shows and community events.

Now how would we apply this concept online? Online this would be comparable to:

(1) Joining social networking sites. Creating profiles and adding your website url on social networking sites gets you in front of the traffic these sites generate.

(2) Building your own satellite sites. These are high PR (page ranked)sites such as Hub Pages or Squidoo that allows you to add your own content to their site. Creating these satellite sites are much like the kiosks at the mall, all directing traffic back to your website through the content and the links you have placed on your profile and satellite sites.

As an online business owner, you will need to create profiles at high pr social networking sites and create satellite pages directing traffic to your website. Sounds, good so far, but creating, maintaining and updating these off page traffic generation sources, while beneficial to your business can be labor intensive without the right tools.

Use the free tools listed below to redirect traffic from high page ranked sites to your site.

Google Gmail:

Create a Google Gmail account. It is fast and easy to set up. Keep it separate from your regular email. You will need it to confirm emails from the social networking sites and to “dump” the occasional or regular emails they send you.

Firefox Browser:

Next download the Firefox browser. It’s free. It does not interfere with internet explorer. And best of all, it has many add-ons that you will find useful. You will need its multiple tab feature to jump back and forth between opened tabs to make your online business more efficient.

Roboform is a password manager. The trial version is free. You will need this to save you logins and passwords to all the social networking sites you create.

Follow the process above. Do not put this off, schedule it. This kind of traffic is time consuming to set up but very easy to maintain with the tools above and following this traffic generation process will prepare you for the next step.

Most sites on the web were built before the invasion of the wordpress blogging platform was in general use. Using a html editor created functional and beautiful sites. However they do not provide for the ease of traffic generation that a wordpress blogging platform provides.

The wordpress platform allows for more social traffic in many ways. Three of which are:
1) The use of automatic pinging when new posts are made to the blog.
2) Provides a continuously updated rss feed for visitors to add to their favorite feed readers such as Google, Yahoo and Bloglines, inviting returning visitor traffic.
3) Automatic updating of the rss (really simple syndication) feeds that can be submitted to rss feed directories.

Meanwhile, sites created with html editors, static page sites or adsense template sites, have become the poor cousin to the blogging sites when it comes to traffic generation.

It is not that these sites cannot achieve the traffic generating results of the wordpress blogging platform. They can, but it will require more knowledge and more work to achieve the same result. For example, how do you acquire rss traffic when a static or adsense template site cannot generate a rss feed automatically? Simple answer, create a rss feed manually.

It may sound like a daunting task, at first, but keep reading. Its as simple as basic html, with the use of open and close tags.

Creating a rss feed is simple and easy once you understand the structure. Now you can see the potential for your static and adsense template websites. Copy the above code or what you automatically generated into notepad and save as whatever name you would like for your feed page name. Upload this text file to your site folder and rename the .txt extension to .rss.

How to use Digg to Generate Traffic

Using Digg for driving traffic to a website is controversial. Some people claim it is not even worth doing, yet others have had massive success with it. Digg seems to be like this, extremes with very little middle ground. There is so much importance attached to getting on the front page. If you can manage to get a story on to the home page of Digg, then you can expect to receive thousands of extra visitors to your site. It really is worth shooting for if you have any chance of making it happen.

You will need to submit your story to Digg, and then rely on other people to vote for it. This is what is known as the ‘Digg’. You will need a good number of votes to have any chance of making it to the home page and picking up the thousands of extra visitors. It has been estimated at over fifty, and it is unlikely to ever get any less, as ever greater numbers of people are using the site, yet the amount of space remains the same. If you can get someone else to submit the story, or if it happens naturally, that is so much better, and will give you a much higher chance of getting the votes you need.

If you want to give your story the best possible chance of being voted for, you need to attract the reader’s attention quickly. This means that having an interesting headline and description is of paramount importance. There are plenty of competing articles, and the reader can’t read them all. Give them a compelling reason to read yours. It also makes a difference if your content is fresh and relevant. If you are writing on topics which are current and hot right now, your chances of getting votes increases enormously. Don’t forget also that readers are more likely to vote for something which is of genuine use to them, so if you can produce an article with genuinely helpful information in it, you will certainly gain votes.
